Howdy guys, in answer to your question about American football in Europe the answer is yes there was (multiple times). There was a London Monarchs team and they actually won the first “World Bowl” in 1991. I really like Claremonts last storyline on Excalibur and I loved Ron Wagners work. I was a big fan of his from “The Nth Man” comic (which I would recommend to you) and I’m sure you liked his stuff in G.I. Joe.
The Thor comic was pretty interesting. While it was full of Silver Aged silliness, I like the idea that there is consequences for just teleporting Juggernaut off planet to get rid of him.
Keep up the good work and hope you get lots of time off for the holidays.
Wow, Bruce Glenn is well on his way to becoming the assistant editor for this podcast’s content. And yes, he’s right about American football in Europe. The NFL sponsored the main league (smaller leagues existed, one of which John Grisham based a novel on) and some of the team names were fantasticly blunt: Thunder, Surge, Glory, Fire, Machine, etc. It was a fun game to combine these team names to create titles for our own comic books and characters: Thunder Machine, Galaxy Riders, Dragons Fire, Glory Centurions, etc.
Btw, we’re getting chronologically close to Marvel releasing the NFL Super Pro comic book. I don’t remember if the X-Men ever guest starred in it but if they did then you’ve got some more potential B-side and C-side material as the 90’s continues to expand all things X.
